RL US Congress Subcommittee meets in Second Life

The Washington Post reports that the Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet met in Second Life, most of the committee members being SL newbies, with folks from Linden Labs, IBM and a tech firm that helps non-profits with technology. They met in the Rayburn House Office Building replica build (I'm not sure where that is on the grid), and asked questions about the virtual world.

SL Job Interviews for RL Jobs (NY Times)

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/10/jobs/10pre.html?_r=1&ref=technology&oref=slogin

An article about the experience of getting interviewed in Second Life by an author that hadn't been in SL before the interview. He did pretty well for a brand-new avatar, and his observations about the experience show a great window into the world of SL as seen by non-SL'ers.

"The Connolly Telegraph showcases the 19th century sims of second life... Caledon, New babbage, Steelhead City, Winterfell, Antiquity, the Tombstone sims, Yankton, Deadwood, and many more. Our vision is to unite the 19th century SL citizens while still retaining the unique character and atmosphere of these varied and fascinating places."

Neat.

See the Sky News studio in Second Life

One of the first (or the first?) full TV studios constructed in SL belongs to Sky News International. From the story and video on their web site, they have already done a full simul-cast from the live studio and SL studio, complete with avatars for all the guests on the show.

(News item) Second Life: A Virtual Universe for Real Engineering

Design News magazine writes about how Second Life is transforming the way engineers work and design. Because you can script items, movement, and interaction, Second Life engineer modeling can sometimes do more than 3D-CAD systems (for some applications).

BBC News: Do avatars dream of electric racoons?

A nice online story and a video of a good-length segment that ran on BBC news. Touches on some international issues and mentions a couple other systems after a nice intro to Second Life for folks that haven't seen SL yet.
